In both cases, summer should be in lowercase, not uppercase. In fact, according to AP Style, the seasons of the year always go in lowercase.

Here are some exceptions to the rule:

  • When they’re part of a title, as they are in this post
  • When you’re writing a standalone greeting like Happy Summer!
  • When you’re putting a date on something like a newsletter, for example, Summer 2019
  • Or when you’re writing for The New Yorker (lucky you), which follows its own quirky style guidelines

Before we know it, fall and winter will be here, so enjoy the warm summer months while they last.
